At a time when tuition costs are skyrocketing, for-profit universities are gaining traction, and approximately a third of U.S. students have already taken an online course, the future of higher education is unclear.  In recognition of this changing landscape, the Hinckley Institute of Politics is proud to present the Sixteenth Annual Rocco C. and Marion S. Siciliano Forum, “Considerations on the Status of the American Society,” which will examine “The Future of Higher Education.”

This forum, being held March 4-12, includes a keynote address by U alumnus John Warnock BS’61 MS’64 PhD’69, co-founder of Adobe Systems, Inc., TODAY, March 5, at 12:30 p.m. in the Gould Auditorium at the Marriott Library.

Click here for a detailed schedule of events.

Warnock first helped launch desktop publishing and then ushered in the “paperless” office, developing the PostScript software that enabled desktop computers and printers to create sophisticated page layouts for the first time, and later inventing the PDF. He has been recognized with numerous scientific and technical awards, including the Marconi Prize—the highest honor for work in information science and communications—and received the University of Utah Distinguished Alumnus Award in 1995.

In keeping with the Alumni Association’s ongoing commitment to fostering educational opportunities, the association’s Emeritus Alumni Board would like to award $40,000 in scholarships this year to promising students at Salt Lake City's Bryant Middle School to help them attend college after high school.

“Many of these students are refugees who have fled Somalia, Sudan, Eritrea, Bosnia and Iraq,” says Ross Bowen, chair of the Bryant Scholarship Project. “We are hoping that alumni will have a special place in their hearts for these young children and understand the difficulties that they have overcome.”

Bryant Middle School currently has 490 students, with some 30 nations represented and 25 languages spoken. With the generosity of Emeritus board members, alumni and friends, 20 students are now on the road to receiving $5,000 for their freshman year of college.

    • One scholarship recipient is a Somali refugee born in Kenya. He is currently a junior in high school with excellent grades and is taking honors courses. He runs for the track team, is a member of Upward Bound and participates in a student writing group through Salt Lake Community College. He has had several essays and poems published in literary magazines. He is most proud of a letter he received from President Barack Obama in response to one he wrote.
    • Another scholarship recipient, a refugee from Eritrea, is currently a sophomore in high school. Her reading and math skills have improved monumentally since her time at Bryant. She is doing well in school and uses her free time to volunteer in the community and help her younger siblings with their homework. Recently she wrote a letter to her middle school teacher and said, “That [Emeritus] scholarship is my life. My goal is to work hard in high school and get good grades so I can receive that scholarship, because that scholarship is my hope to have a better life.”

Due to widespread interest from Utes in Chicago, University of Utah Alumni Association staff members recently met with U graduates in the Chicago area who wanted to form a new Alumni Association chapter. A chapter board was appointed, and Jason Barlow agreed to serve as the group's initial chapter president.

If you live in the Chicago area and would like to connect with the chapter and find out about upcoming events, join their Facebook group or LinkedIn group, or check out their chapter page on the Alumni Association's website.

An alumni chapter is managed by a volunteer group of University of Utah alumni who are interested in having a great time interacting with fellow alumni. The goal is to help U alumni reconnect with the University and with each other, and to continue to build on the U’s strong traditions. Each chapter gives alumni the chance to stay involved with the U. The Alumni Association encourages all alumni to become involved with their local chapter. Visit the chapter section of the Alumni Association's website to see if there are any upcoming events in your area.
